What is an unplugged ceremony and why is it becoming a wedding trend ?

Updated: Jan 29

This particular blog was fairly easy for me to write so that's a first! I normally sit here with writers block I'm a photographer not a writer!

So what is a unplugged ceremony ? Well if your unsure you have arrived in the right place. It means no devices at all for your ceremony no phones no cameras and no iPads basically not technology at all. We are not talking all day mind you this is just for the ceremony.

So why is this becoming a new wedding trend?

I'm going to dive in to the benefits of having a unplugged ceremony. Lets be honest If you don't have your phone or any device for that matter you cant be distracted from the ceremony encouraging your guests to put down their favourite devices can be tricky. As with any special request you make of your wedding guests, you need to be sensitive and respectful if you're thinking of having an unplugged wedding ceremony.

So how do you request that people don't get out there devices at your ceremony? You could include a short note in your program like this.

" We want you to be able to relax and have fun with us today! With this in mind we invite you to put down you favourite device and just be present and in the moment with us. Please leave your camera in your bag or pocket (we have the photography covered!) please put your mobile on silent we promise they will call you back. We are happy to share our professional wedding photos with you later but the best gift you can give us today is just being fully hear with is in this very special moment. "

Another way to ask people to put away there device is to have your officiant remind them it is an unplugged ceremony just before it officially starts. They will normally say something like this.

" I invite you to be truly present at this special time. Please, turn off your mobile phones and put down your cameras. The photographer will capture how this moment looks — I encourage you all to capture how it feels with your hearts, without the distraction of technology. "

After your wedding make sure you share some photos with your guests. As soon as you can make prints to include with each thank you card we did this for our own wedding. Also make wedding photos available to guests online if possible.
